“But, Adam, I don’t like having my picture taken. It’s sort of the same feeling I get as going to the dentist…”

Please don’t dread it! Think of your headshot session as something fun and light hearted! I promise to do whatever it is takes to make you feel comfortable and at home during your session.  My goal is to make it a joyful, relaxing, fun experience while bringing out the best reflection of you!

The “look”: We shoot headshots for most clients on a white, black or grey background. (Most people choose white - but it's totally up to you.)  For business headshots, a solid background keeps the focus on the person being photographed (they “pop”) - and the subject doesn’t compete with a busy background (as compared to a an old-school elementary school photo…).

Here are examples of some different color backgrounds:

How the headshot session works:

When you arrive, we’ll get the lights and the camera set up to match your height and skin tone. We may shoot a few text shots - but then I’ll coach you through experimenting with different angles and expressions. As we go through your session, we’ll stop periodically to review the shots we’ve taken. We will determine what’s working and change what isn’t. We’re looking to find “your angle” and I’ll help you find it.

When we’re all finished with your session, we’ll review the images that have made it to our final cuts, select the one or ones we love and discard the ones we don’t.

After you’ve chosen your image(s), they will be professionally retouched and returned to you in 3-5 business days. Each image needs to be hand retouched - but not overdone. You won’t look like you’ve been through some crazy phone app. You’ll have a beautiful final product you’ll be happy to share with the world.

What about the lights? In the past, people didn’t like the bright strobe lights blinding them with each photo. Good news! Technology has fixed this problem. I shoot with continuous LED “beauty lights”. When you get into your spot, your eyes will adjust to the lights. But, then, the only flashes of light will be on the background to get the pure white look (not aimed at you).

Considerations for What to Wear: You can feel free to bring a couple articles of clothing items to wear “on top” (shirts, jackets, sweaters…) for the headshot session. (If you’re bringing lots of potential outfit changes, please make sure that you have a longer session time.)

Here are 3 pics of Laura - a Speech Therapist. Here are some examples of different tops against the white background. The first one has the most contrast with the white background - and therefore “pops” the most. The white on white in the second shot is also a great look if you prefer. In the 3rd shot with the bold pattern can work if you like that look or it can detract from the focus on you. Really look at the 3 and see if one is the look your trying to portray in your headshot. There are no wrong answers here - this is art. In general, neutral colors, such as black, white, navy or light grays are great for headshots.  If you enjoy jewel tones, such as emerald green, bright blues, purples etc. feel free!

More Information

In general, I recommend that people stay away from patterns, logos or any graphics, stripes or prints. You are welcome to bring items to layer, such as a well-fitted button down that is layered with  a blazer or vest.

Since the photograph will capture a moment in time, it is important to make sure that whatever items you choose to wear fits well.  Avoid shirts where the buttons tend to pull tightly, or sweaters with pulls or pilling - or where the top is big and blousy. All of these will show up and can be challenging to remove during the "touch up" phase.

Example of larger jewelry

In general, we recommend ewelry should be minimal.  We recommend not wearing anything that will be distracting such as large earrings or long necklaces.

Your photo will only be shot from the waist up - so, feel free to wear something comfortable below the waist (since it won’t be in the photo anyway).  You will be standing for your headshot, therefore we suggest that you wear something on your feet that are comfortable such as sneakers.

Bring any makeup you would like to use for yourself to touch up during the shoot as well as hairbrush, hairspray, hair gel etc.

OK - that’s it for now. See you at your scheduled time!
